The spring of the white-throated dipper

 

 

 

 

After spending a calamitous winter trying to photograph my favorite bird, the wallcreeper, I decide to drop the case. So new season, new subject: the host of the Jura torrents, the white-throated dipper !

The white-throated dipper (Cinclus cinclus) is a small aquatic passerine that frequents rivers and torrents of Europe, Asia and North Africa. It is a small, stocky bird, about 18 to 20 cm long, with a wingspan of 25 to 30 cm and a weight of 46 to 75 g. Its plumage is blackish brown with a white throat and chest, and a red belly.

The white-throated dipper has amazing morphological adaptations, such as nictitating membranes to protect its eyes underwater, nostrils that can close and larger uropygious glands than in other passerines to waterproof its plumage.

 

 

 

This bird prefers the bright, pure and clear waters of mountains and rocky regions. It is sedentary and stays all year round near the streams where it finds its aquatic prey. Rocky and steep areas are particularly popular for nesting.

The white-throated dipper is known for its unique fishing technique: it plunges head first into the water, submerges completely and walks on the bottom against the current. It uses its wings to propel itself and resist the current, flipping stones and searching for aquatic insects, small crustaceans and molluscs. His cry is a sequence of whistling and creaking sounds, and he can also produce a "tsritt" while traveling

The white-throated dipper is mainly insectivorous. It catches aquatic insects on the banks or dives to look for larvae, small crustaceans, molluscs, shrimps and small fish. It locates its prey by sight, its eyes being protected by nictitating membranes.
